How to Create a Cell Phone Text Messaging Ad Campaign
There's a nice discussion on a component of mobile marketing going on at the American Express Open Forum as a result of an article about how small businesses can deliver successful targeted cell phone text messaging (SMS) campaigns to their customers. The same suggestions, however, apply to large organizations and to organizations which want to use SMS campaigns to reach potential employees. Steve Strauss, the author, suggests:

Most and Least Admired Employers
I see a lot of "best of" lists out there. Best restaurants, ice cream, places to live, colleges, phone service, and places to work. Today a number of bloggers and other media outlets have re-published a list of the most admired companies just released by CNNMoney.com, but not many (none?) have published a list of the best and worst employers. Maybe they don't have the guts. Maybe they're smarter than I am. But whatever the reason, here are the most and least admired companies in terms how they...

College Grads Prefer to Job Search Using Niche Job Boards, Not Social Media or General Job Boards
Anyone who is involved in the world of college recruiting will find it of no surprise that a recent survey found that graduating college students who are searching for a job rely heavily on their university career centers and prefer to use niche job sites over general job boards and social networking sites. The survey, commissioned by Beyond.com and conducted by students of the Wharton Small Business Development Center, included participants from a variety of schools across the United States...

Yahoo CEO to Facebook: Show Me the Money
Carol Bartz, new CEO of Yahoo!, in addition to telling Washington to shut up, makes a snide remark about Facebook's lack of revenue. Let's re-visit this in a few years to see whether her confidence in her business model and apparent disdain for Facebook's proves to be justified.

TweetMyJOBS Generates "Only" 18,000 Clicks to 1,000 Postings
One of the interesting topics of discussion this week amongst those involved in the job board industry is a recent announcement by TweetMyJOBS that they generated 18,000 clicks in January to the web site of their client, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG). Apparently, TweetMyJOBS generated about 18 clicks per average job as 1,000 of IHG's jobs ran in January. I've seen some comments critical of 18,000 clicks for 1,000 postings as being not many clicks, but I believe those commenters aren't...

Survey Shows Improved Job Market for Recent College Grads
Hiring activity for new college graduates has picked up some, according to results of a monthly poll conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). NACE's latest poll, reported as an index, found that the overall hiring index for February 2010 is 96.4, up from 86.4 reported in January and near the 98.2 peak reported in December 2009. "The February hiring index is more consistent with the trend we saw developing in the fall," says Marilyn Mackes, NACE executive director....

Boomers to Gen Y: How the Times Have Changed!
The first Baby Boomers turned 18 in 1963, which was the year John F. Kennedy was assassinated, and two decades before personal computers were introduced to a panting marketplace. The first Millennials are in the workplace and some are even managers. Any human resource professional who has studied these generations at even a cursory level is aware that Boomers and Millennials are worlds apart in their career interests. Yet ask these same human resource professionals about the recruiting practices...

3 Tips for How to Use Facebook to Find a New Job
Since Facebook launched six whopping years ago, I've read hundreds and perhaps thousands of articles advising college students, recent graduates, and other job seekers not to use the site or to be careful about how they use it because many employers include Facebook in their background checking process. Like it or not, smart or not, it happens. Few articles that I've read though do a good job of telling job seekers how to use Facebook to find a job. New Grad Life, however, just posted a great...

No Need to Eat Crow
Everyone who knows me knows that I love hockey. I grew up in Winnipeg, Canada. If you've ever been there during the winter, you know that the only thing happening is hockey. Outdoor rinks every few blocks, road hockey, and Hockey Night in Canada. Ahhh, Don Cherry. Yesterday afternoon I enjoyed watching Team Canada narrowly defeat a surprisingly good Team USA in the gold medal game of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Thank goodness. My mother-in-law -- born and raised in Chicago -- joked that...

70% Expect to Find Their Next Job Through a Job Board
I'm an active member of the International Association of Employment Web Sites -- the only association for job boards. Peter Weddle, our executive director, surveyed job seekers to find out where they found their last job. Job seekers are far more likely to know than employers as the vast majority of employers don't track their sources of hire at all or do so in a way that is fundamentally flawed. I was expecting something like 10 to 20 percent to identify job boards as their source but 34 percent...

Are Job Boards Dead?
In a word, no. Some job boards are like zombies in that they're dead but don't know it. By that I mean that their business models are unsustainable. Those job boards are dead or dying because they're selling products that their clients either don't want today or won't want tomorrow. What are the products that employers don't want today or won't want tomorrow? Traditionally priced job postings and resume searching. The reason that I qualify job postings as being dead if they're traditionally...

100 Tips for Starting Your Own Business
The origins of CollegeRecruiter.com date way back to 1988 when I was a senior in college and started a micro business that published campus maps for my undergraduate college. I gave the maps to the school for free and sold the advertising around the borders to local restaurants, apartment companies, retailers, and other organizations. Over the past 22 years, I've heard a lot of people claim that they'd love to start their own business and that they'd be really successful if they only had a good...

Graphical Look at Improvement in Monthly Job Losses
Job losses are always difficult and sometimes devastating for those directly impacted by the layoff, plant closing, or other termination. And when job losses occur in large numbers, they're also difficult and sometimes devastating even for those not directly impacted. That's certainly been the case for the past couple of years as the economy sunk into recession in spring 2008 and only recently is beginning to emerge. Fortunately, it is apparent from the graph below that the number of jobs being...

Employers: Your Career Sites Are Not Sources of Hires
"The customer is always right," right? Wrong. We've fought few battles with our employer clients since 1994 when we launched an employment magazine and this web site that morphed out of it but one that we fight is the misconception by so many employers about how they can and should track their source of hires. Don't get me wrong: unlike some of our competitors, we want our employer clients to track their sources of hires because we're confident that for the vast majority of our clients we are...

Will Google Buzz Force Employers to Stop Blocking Social Media Sites?
Over the past couple of years, a small but growing minority of employers and universities have chosen to get out of the email hosting business and outsource that I.T. function to Google's Gmail service. These organizations are then able to offer much more robust and secure email to their employees and those employees can choose whether to use Gmail's standard web-based interface or continue to use email clients such as Outlook. Another trend over the past few years has been the growing majority...
