Another Good Sign for Economic Recovery
I've had the good fortune of attending and presenting at a number of Onrec Expo recruiting conferences, including last fall's conference in Chicago and again this coming fall, also in Chicago. The typical exhibiting vendor or attending employer spends thousands of dollars to be a part of these types of conferences so exhibitors and attendees tend to fall in number when budgets are tight and increase in number when organizations are a little more flush with cash and optimism. As a result, it...

Shhh! Don't tell anyone, but CollegeRecruiter.com is going social.
CollegeRecruiter.com is in the process of re-building our college job board to put much more emphasis on content and community and much less emphasis on the traditional job board tools such as postings. We'll certainly still have postings and you'll find a search engine on the front page and hundreds of employer, location, and occupational field specific pages with postings for each pre-populated right on those pages (i.e., you'll see all of the postings in Dallas when you go to the Dallas page)...

Desperate Job Seekers Employing Unusual Job Hunting Tactics
College students, recent graduates, and other job seekers are turning to unconventional job hunting tactics in an effort to stand out from their competitors as the nation's unemployment rate continues to hover around 10 percent. Indeed, 22 percent of hiring managers report that they are seeing more job seekers try unusual tactics to capture their attention in 2010 compared to last year. This is up from 18 percent of hiring managers who said the same in 2009 and 12 percent in 2008. "While we are...

Open Letter from Ted Daywalt of VetJobs to ICANN Regarding Transfer of .jobs Domains from SHRM to Employ Media
As reported earlier today by John Zappe of ERE, "[t]he expansion of the .jobs Internet address has been given the go-ahead by the Society for Human Resource Management, paving the way for the launch of what could be hundreds of thousands of new job boards. SHRM made the announcement this morning." Why should any job seeker, employer, job board owner, or other human resource professional care? Because the process stunk and lacked an open, honest, and transparent process. Despite SHRM's many, many...

CACEE Presentation About Re-building Employer Career Web Site
Outside of the U.S. military, I doubt that there are any employers who recruit at as many college campuses and reach as many students as does Enterprise Rent-a-Car, now part of Enterprise Holdings. CollegeRecruiter.com has had the good fortune to work with ERAC for years and so I was excited to learn that Marie Artim, who heads up their global college recruiting efforts, would be presenting immediately after me at this week's Canadian Association of Career Educators and Employers (CACEE) annual...

32% of Gen Y Okay With Calling in Sick Via Text Message
Like the telephone 100 years ago, fax machines starting in the 1970's, and email in the 1990's, employers and employees alike are struggling to adapt to new communication technologies and how they can and should be used. The current struggle seems to largely be over the appropriate use of text messaging in and about the workplace. A new survey by free texting app textPlus shows certain workplace interactions -- those traditionally reserved for a face-to-face or phone conversations -- are taking...

TMP's "The Game" at #NACE10 Was a Great Success
One of my favorite people in the digital recruiting industry is Steven Ehrlich, Global Vice President, Client Development, of TMP Worldwide Advertising & Communications, LLC. For those who have not had the pleasure of meeting Steve, his job is largely to be a visionary and tackle special assignments for TMP. From everything that I've seen and heard, he does his job very, very well. Last week's National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) 2010 annual conference in Orlando featured...

CACEE Conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia
I'm in Halifax, Nova Scotia this week for the Canadian Association of Career Educators and Employers (CACEE) college and university recruiting conference. It is, more or less, the Canadian equivalent of last week's National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) college recruiting conference in Orlando. As you might expect in Canada given that its population is one tenth of the population of its neighbor to the south, the attendance at CACEE is significantly smaller but if you multiply...

Are Twitter and Facebook Killing Job Boards?
Many of my fellow job board owners are like ostriches with their heads in the sand. They don't want to admit that social media is having and will have more of an impact on our businesses. Unfortunately, those owners fail to realize that while some of the effect is and will continue to be negative, some is and will continue to be positive. More and more employers are not just talking about building candidate communities but they're actually doing it and social media is integral to the success...

Did Twitter Just Kill TweetMyJobs, TweetaJob, TwitterJobSearch, TwitJobSearch?
Twitter just announced that it is clamping down on third party sites and networks which use Twitter's application programming interface (API) to distribute ads to Twitter subscribers. The new rules won't impact those who manually post paid ads to their Twitter accounts but will certainly effect the most popular Twitter job board sites such as TweetMyJobs, TweetaJob, TwitterJobSearch, and TwitJobSearch. "We will not allow any third party to inject paid tweets into a timeline on any service that...

Mentors Can Be Nightmares
When mentoring goes well, it can be of great benefit to young managers. But when it goes wrong, it can have lasting negative effects for both mentors and their protégés. Stacey Delo talks with Dawn Chandler of Cal Poly's Orfalea College of Business in San Luis Obispo for some advise on how to keep mentoring relationships from going bad:

Bizarre Interview Questions From Gen Y Candidates
Many employers pay a lot of attention to training their recruiters and hiring managers on what questions to ask and not ask during job interviews but far fewer seem to pay enough attention and some virtually no attention to how to answer unusual and sometimes even seemingly bizarre questions asked by the candidates. Diane Spiegel, CEO of corporate training and development firm The End Result, published an article today at ERE in which she discussed seven questions that a typical Gen X or Baby...

Partial Twitter List of Attendees of ERE #SocialRecruiting Summit -- Are You Listed?
I haven't seen a good list elsewhere of Twitter handles from the 300 or so attendees of the very, very excellent ERE Social Recruiting Summit that was held yesterday at the Best Buy world headquarters in suburban Minneapolis. I created a good but partial list of attendees so that attendees could more easily network with each other, non-attendees could more easily follow the many recruiting thought leaders who were able to make it, etc. If you attended, please check http://tweepml.org/Social-Recruiting/...
