The I Need a Freakin Job Movement
In another sign of the times, the brand new I Need a Freakin Job grass roots movement is gaining steam and therefore an increased ability to advocate for the millions of Americans and American families affected by the unemployment crisis. A group of unemployed Buffalo residents created a INAFJ.org web site, Facebook Fan Page, and put up the above billboard for President Obama, who was in Buffalo a few days ago to talk about creating jobs. The President's motorcade passed by the billboard and... |

Twitter List for Attendees of LinkUp's Tweet-Up at the ERE #SocialRecruiting Summit
Whether you're able to attend next Monday's ERE Social Recruiting Summit at the Best Buy world headquarters in suburban Minneapolis, the LinkUp-sponsored Tweet-Up social hour (actually, three hours) the evening before, or none of it, you should follow all of the attendees if you're a user of Twitter or, as some would say, a Twit. About 100 people have RSVP'd yes so far to the Tweet-Up and provided their Twitter handles. Rather than having to follow each of them individually, I set up a TweetML... |

Biggest High School Graduating Class in History Becomes Biggest College Freshman Class in History
There's no doubt that the recession has had a big role to play in the situation but regardless of the causes, the U.S. Department of Labor recently confirmed that the graduating high school class of 2009 -- the largest in history -- has also become the largest college freshman in history with a whopping 70.1 percent of the 2.9 million enrolling in college. SMS Marketing Must Be Opt-in Even Though Email Need Not Be
Reasonable people can differ on the effect the federal anti-spam legislation, CAN-SPAM, has had on the world of email marketing. On the one hand, it has probably increased the amount of commercial, bulk email that we all receive because Congress gave direct marketers a set of rules to follow and they're legally protected from lawsuits provided they follow those rules. On the one hand, those rules protect consumers because they prohibit misleading subject lines and require automated opt-out links... |

How College Students Should Use Job Boards
The biggest mistake the first time job seekers make when it comes to using job-search websites such as Monster, Careerbuilder, Dice, CollegeRecruiter.com, or any of the other 100,000 is relying too much on them. Job boards by conservative measure account for about 12 percent of new hires and by industry measure for about a third of new hires. The share of new hires derived from job boards is increasing regardless of which camp you listen to, so this issue is becoming more and more important... |

HIRE Act More About Politics Than Economics
There are a lot of signs that the economy continues to emerge -- slowly -- from the worst recession since the Depression of the 1930's. Consumer confidence is up. Stocks are up. Hiring is up. Houses are selling again. The turnaround has and will continue to benefit areas and individuals to different degrees. If your stocks are up, you sold your house, and you found a new job, the economic recovery is going to look pretty good to you. But if your stocks are still in the tank, your home is in... |

College Students Rank Google, NASA as Employers of Choice
Our friends at Universum USA just announced the results of their annual employer image survey, also known as IDEAL Employer Survey. Google is the highest ranking employer with 14.76 percent of undergraduate students ranking them as an IDEAL Employer. The rankings reflect the level of employer attractiveness that companies or organizations have on the recruitment market and, consequently, the strength of their employer brands. To rank employers, Universum surveyed approximately 56,900 undergraduate... |

Turn Your Error Into a Positive by Accepting Responsibility
I was in the Washington, D.C. metro area a few weeks ago for the Advanced Learning Institute's Social Media for Government & Defense Recruiters conference. Along with most of the out-of-towners, I headed to the airport at the conclusion of the second and last day of the conference. One of the attendees and I connected earlier in the day and agreed to share a cab as we were both flying out of Reagan National (DCA) and our flights were at almost the same time. We booked a cab to pick us up... |

Most U.S. Employers Report They've Gone Green
Going "green" in the workplace can lead to more green in the bank according to a new survey released today from Buck Consultants, an independent subsidiary of ACS, A Xerox Company. The survey showed that the number of U.S. employers with formal "green workplace" programs rose significantly last year with many organizations reporting cost savings from reduced use of paper and electricity. Buck's second annual "Greening of the American Workplace 2009" survey showed 53 percent of employers have... |

Do I need a passport to visit Arizona?
Such a question would have been laughable just months ago. As a U.S. citizen, of course there has never been a reason for me to carry my passport or other proof of residency / citizenship around with me regardless of where I am in the U.S. That is, until days ago when Arizona the legislature passed and the governor signed a law designed to combat the severe illegal immigration issues they face. The new Arizona law will require police officers to arrest and detain anyone they have reasonable cause... |

Reflections on the TRU USA Recruiting Unconference
I spent this past Monday and Tuesday in Madison, Wisconsin with dozens of very experienced and very thoughtful recruiters and other human resource professionals. Unlike typical recruiting conferences where the agenda is pretty much set in stone and the sessions consist of a presenter delivering a PowerPoint and answering questions at the end of the 60 or 75 minutes, this was an unconference in that there were no presenters and no PowerPoints. Instead, each track or topic was led by a small group... |

Job Forecast Shows College Grads Facing Highly Competitive Job Market But Pay Likely Higher Than Last Year
A recent survey of hiring managers indicates that the overall job market for 2010 college graduates will remain highly competitive, but is showing some signs of improvement. According to the survey by Harris Interactive, the total number of employers planning to hire recent college graduates in 2010 - 44 percent - is relatively unchanged from 43 percent in 2009 and is down from a high of 79 percent in 2007. However, one-in-five employers (21 percent) who are hiring recent college graduates said... |

College Hiring Up 5.3 Percent
Employers have more opportunities for the college Class of 2010 than they did a year ago, according to a new report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). NACE's Job Outlook 2010 Spring Update shows employers expect to hire 5.3 percent more new college graduates in 2009-10 than they did in 2008-09. "This is the first positive hiring outlook for new college graduates since October of 2008," says Marilyn Mackes, NACE executive director. In October 2008, employers projected... |

How Do I Start and Build My Own e-Business?
Last year, or maybe two years ago, my father and I attended a seminar presented by a company that hosts and maintains Web sites for people who want to start online businesses. As someone who was once a small-business owner, he knows what is involved in such a venture. But what about those people who are interested in starting their own e-businesses but don't have a clue where to start? The video below will point them in the right direction. |
